All about the Bebat environmental contribution

→ Legally required contribution

Just like regular batteries, in Belgium there are also for ‘plug batteries’, also ‘plug and play batteries’ or ‘plugin batteries’ certain rules and laws regarding take-back and recycling.

The Bebat environmental contribution is a legally required contribution that must be paid by the producer, importer or seller who offers plug-in batteries on the Belgian market. This legal environmental contribution is intended to collect and recycle batteries easily, safely and efficiently

Recycling batteries is not only better for the environment, but better for all of us. By recycling empty batteries we contribute to:

Environmental protection

By recycling batteries we prevent harmful substances from entering nature.

Circular economy

Important metals are recovered and reused from empty batteries, which then do not need to be extracted from nature. Some of these are very scarce.

Safety

By correctly collecting, sorting, and recycling batteries, we prevent them from ending up among other waste fractions where they can pose a safety risk.

→ What does that mean for a consumer who has purchased a plug battery?

As a consumer, you want to be sure that the legally required Bebat environmental contribution for the plug battery you purchased has been effectively paid by the seller of your battery. Only then can you be assured that you will not have worries or unexpected costs later when the battery needs to be replaced or recycled.

By checking whether your supplier has effectively paid the Bebat environmental contribution, you avoid being responsible for something the seller should have done. Because if the producer, importer, or seller has not paid the Bebat environmental contribution, then the consumer must bear the cost of the unpaid environmental contribution.

Ask your supplier the question: “Is my plug battery registered with Bebat and has the environmental contribution been paid?”. A reliable party can confirm that immediately.

Do you have doubts? Feel free to address this with your supplier.
